Knutsford 28-7 Eagle 2nd

ALEX Malcolm’s solo display earned him the man of the match award as Knutsford recorded a second successive victory since switching to a new league.

He displayed lightening pace to run from his own half before touching down Blues’ fourth try, earning a bonus-point in the process, at the end of a hard-fought contest with Eagle at the Academy.

The full-back added the extras too.

His teammates had struggled to get out of their own half earlier on, but they restricted the visitors to a converted try after defending doggedly.

They survived a spell with 14 men too thanks to big defensive hits from Howard Dunkerley and Giles Robertson.

And that resilience earned reward when Malcolm converted tries between the posts for Matt Cornes and Alex Davies to establish a 14-7 lead at the interval.

Eagle were more direct after half time, keeping the ball close and making ground deep into Blues’ territory.

But the hosts’ defence held firm, and they added to their advantage when fly-half Rick Jones bounced over the line.

Malcolm duly kicked a conversion.

The game opened up, which favoured Knutsford, and they added gloss to the result with Malcolm’s individual effort with time running out.

They will hope to repeat the trick when they travel to Whitchurch’s fourths this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Before that the senior players gather for training at Knutsford Leisure Centre on Thursday, between 7pm and 8pm.
