THE rising number of girls wanting to play for Knutsford Netball Club’s junior teams has prompted coaches to set aside another night for practice sessions.

They say membership has tripled over the past year, leading children’s names to be put on a waiting list.

However they will have a chance to train at the leisure centre on Tuesdays from September.

“We have more than 60 players now,” said Kate Kindred, a volunteer who established again a section for youngsters late in 2014.

“We’ll continue to be ambitious though, which is why we’ve decided to add a second night for practice.”

Newcomers are joining a successful set-up.

Two Knutsford teams, one for under 11s and another for under 12s, have finished first in their section in the Cheshire East Junior League – a development competition for emerging players – in the most recent season.

The club is represented by two more squads in the Cheshire Junior League.

Six trainers, including county coach Phil Owen, coach girls aged between eight and 12 every week.

Kindred said: “All our girls competed at a high standard last season in both competitions.

“Our aspirations are high for next term too, and new players are welcome to join.”

The club has scheduled a two-day summer camp at Knutsford Leisure Centre, starting on August 3.
