INSTANT success of a new football academy in Knutsford is leading to additional places being made available.

Teenage boys interested in combining playing football with studying for a qualification can attend an open session on Sunday when further enrolment for September’s start takes place.

The opportunity also provides a route into higher education.

The football academy is based at the Studio School at Knutsford Academy, and the football delivered at Egerton FC - the Chehire FA’s Charter Standard Community Club of the Year.

Following the level of interest in the pilot of the academy over the past few months, current year 11 pupils with a passion for football are now invited to apply for one of 10 additional places.

“The feedback from attendees on our pilot programme has been incredible, with a lot of interest,” said Gaynor Clifton, Egerton FC development officer.

“We are excited to welcome potential football academy attendees to our open session on Sunday when they will be able to get a real flavour for the exciting opportunities available to them.”

Students aged 16 to 18 will receive advanced football coaching and can also focus on BTEC and A Level academic courses.

The football coaching is provided by FA and UEFA qualified coaches, including former Premier League players Paul Butler and Jon Macken.

Students are also given the opportunity to achieve qualifications in coaching, refereeing and performance analysis software competency.

The academic programme includes access to BTEC options in sport, business, media and public services, as well as to more than 30 A Level options taught in the Studio School at Knutsford Academy.

Successful completion of the course can lead to options for apprenticeships, other employment opportunities and further study routes including sponsorships at US based universities.

Those interested in joining the academy can visit Egerton’s Mereheath Lane home on Sunday at 1pm for a two-hour training session and to register.
