OLIVER Webb improved on previous results in the latest round of the World Endurance Championship, although a return to the podium continues to elude him.

The Knutsford driver helped Team SARD Morand to fourth position by the end of Sunday's six-hour race in China - a fourth successive top-five finish.

"It was another strong effort," he said afterwards.

"We were on the back foot going into the race because it was wet, and we've not tested in those conditions.

"It meant I had to learn the circuit again, just as I did in Japan [last time out], but it was still great fun."

He did the first stint behind the wheel of the Swiss outfit's Morgan-powered machine, rising to third in the LMP2 class shortly after the start.

Following a double shift, he pitted with weather conditions worsening.

Teammate Pierre Ragues ran consistently in fourth before Webb returned for a penultimate session.

He consistently set lap times that rated inside his category's top three, handing over to Canadian ace Chris Cumming who held station in fourth for the races's remainder.

It leaves Webb and company placed fifth in the standings ahead of the final round in Bahrain later this month.

He said: "The race brought so many challenges, but the team had set up the car with great balance. That put us in a good position.

"And for the second meeting in a row, we beat the previous lap record for a Morgan chassis.

"There's one race left, and we'll keep pushing for the podium."
