KNUTSFORD finished eighth in the Cheshire Alliance's second tier following a six-wicket success against Mellor on the season's final afternoon.

Set a target of 168 to win, a partnership worth 62 for the second wicket between Abid Ali (44) and Simon Saleem (67no) set them on course for victory.

Saleem later added 55 for the fourth wicket with Mohammad Iqbal (26) to complete the job.

Earlier, the visitors posted 167-5 after being put in, with Sam Smith (72) and Steve Harrison sharing in a century partnership for the second wicket.

John Sheldon (2-26) was the pick of the hosts' attack.

Knutsford seconds secured sixth spot in Division Three after a four-wicket win at their Wistaston counterparts in their remaining match.

A collective effort from the visitors' bowling attack restricted the home team to 141 all out, with Sam Wood (3-18) leading the way.

Adil Bhatti, James Derbyshire and Darragh Downey picked up two wickets each.

Knutsford scored the required runs by the 32nd over thanks largely to Atif Shah (64).
