GIRLS from Knutsford won an award for their conduct on court when playing in a competition for the first time.

They brought home the Gladys Cope Fair Play Trophy from a tournament in Sandbach after umpires and organisers agreed their behaviour had been best during matches.

It marks the latest stage in their development since Knutsford Netball Club introduced again a section for juniors last November.

Now, more than 40 girls train together every week at the town’s leisure centre.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response,” said Kate Kindred, who came up with the idea to start new teams after the old ones disbanded.

“There was a gaping hole left, and we’ve found a way to fill it. There’s been a lot of progress in a short space of time.

“After overcoming their inexperience in the competition’s early games, they improved phenomenally as it progressed.”

Knutsford plan to enter teams in the Cheshire Junior League from next season.

Before that, they have arranged a two-day summer camp which starts next Thursday, August 6, from 8.30am until 3pm.

It is a chance for new players, in Years 4 to 6 at primary school, to get a feel for the club.

“If there are girls still considering whether to join, then the summer camp is a good opportunity to find out what we do,” added Kindred.

Weekly practice sessions, scheduled for every Monday evening, resume in September.
