ADAM Jenkinson says he feels fortunate not to have been more seriously hurt after he crashed during a race while travelling at more than 150mph.

The Knutsford rider’s Yamaha machine suffered brake failure on the fifth lap of last weekend’s Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship race at Donington Park, causing the 30-year-old to go airborne.

He suffered dislocation and a break to bones in his right hand.

“It was a very scary moment,” he said.

“There hadn’t been a problem with the brakes previously, but as I tried to slow down going into Redgate the bar came right back to the lever.

“All I had to slow me down was a little bit of back brake, so I had to bail out as soon as I hit the gravel and just flew into the air fencing at the side of the circuit.

“To only suffer minor injuries is a miracle.”

Jenkinson’s team, Northern Escalator Installations, have sent the part for analysis by the manufacturer after an initial inspection cleared them of blame for the accident.

He had been among the fastest riders during free practice before setting the third quickest lap during the second qualifying session – a 1:31.276.

Jenkinson was on course for a podium finish during the race too.

He added: “The bike had been perfect all weekend, we had good pace and I felt confident before the race.

“I know it was no fault of the team, and we’re just waiting now to see what the problem was.”
