TENNIS players will spend a grant on bringing courts at their club up to scratch.

Knutsford Tennis Club have been promised a £50,000 share from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund. which cover the cost of repairing subsidence below three of their seven floodlit playing spaces.

They will then be resurfaced.

“It means we can pursue our goal of increasing participation in the sport within the local community,” said chairman Helen Sawyer.

“We believe it’s important for a growing, vibrant town like ours to be able to offer a wide range of sporting facilities, and are grateful to Sport England for a grant that will help us to do exactly that.”

The club’s members have played a part too, raising £10,000 from a Tennis-A-Thon last year.

Work on the courts at Knutsford Sports Club, on Mereheath Lane, is scheduled for later in 2015.

“I was delighted to hear Knutsford Tennis Club has been awarded a grant by Sport England,” said George Osborne, MP for Tatton.

“Improved facilities will allow the club to continue its important work in our community, encouraging as many Knutsfordians as possible to play tennis.

“Who knows? There could be Cheshire’s answer to Andy Murray in our midst!”

The club plans to host an open day next month, when neighbours and their children can take part in a free taster session.

It is provisionally scheduled for Saturday, June 13, between 2pm and 4pm.

Sawyer said: “We’re open to everybody, from beginners upwards. Budding players from four through to 80-years-old are very welcome.”
