Tarporley Victoria 0 Egerton 2

EGERTON returned to competitive action for the first time since November by beating lowly Tarporley on Saturday.

The Yellows kept alive their hopes of being promoted from League One thanks to a goal in each half from Chris Trowbridge and Mickey Evans.

They remain third in the table.

Boss Graham Egerton praised his side’s hard work following a seven-week wait to play again.

“The lads’ application and effort was great to see,” he said.

“We were by no means at our best quality-wise, but when you’re as hard-working and organised as we were then you deserve something.

"That makes a win even sweeter.”

Evans slid in Trowbridge to open the scoring midway through the first half, while a centre back partnership of Dan Clawson and Tim Beresford stood firm at the other end.

Adam Fulker and Shaun Carter were introduced for a tiring Egerton team after the interval, and it was the latter who threaded a ball through for Evans to grab his 14th goal of the season.

With quarter of an hour left, the visitors introduced young duo Dominic Egerton and Tommy Johnstone for their first team debuts.

The first-timers injected youthful exuberance, helping to freshen up Egerton as the Knutsford outfit protected their two-goal lead.

Egerton are on JA Walton Challenge Cup duty this Saturday at home to Cheadle Town’s reserves, kick off 2pm.

Egerton: Shalcross (GK), Maunder, Clawson, Beresford, Sutcliffe, Mayers, Ellis, Pownall, Wells, Trowbridge, Evans. Subs (all used): Carter, Fulker, Egerton, Johnstone.
