Billinge 1 Knutsford 2

KNUTSFORD returned to the top of the Cheshire League Premier Division when they kept their 100 per cent away record intact with a win at Billinge on Saturday.

The Manchester Road outfit fought back from a goal down with Vinnie Braine netting and the winner coming from an own goal.

Player-manager Scott Dignan returned to the starting line up, along with Richard Smart, while skipper Steve Jenyons started on the bench after picking up an injury.

The visitors found themselves behind on 22 minutes when Jamie Anderson drove past four Knutsford defenders before laying the ball off to Robert Ablewhite, whose fierce shot found its way past keeper Sam Moore.

Dignan issued strong words at half time and began to create opportunities immediately with Sean Lynch’s header well saved.

An Owens free kick was the next to test Thomas Hull, while Braine steered an effort wide from a low James Pickford cross.

Knutsford’s persistence paid off shortly after the hour mark when Pickford found Braine and the forward finished well to bring Dignan’s side level.

However, when Moore misjudged a cross moments later the hosts were nearly back in front, only for Ablewhite’s effort to come back off the inside of the post.

Then, on 75 minutes, the Reds took the lead for the first time. Young drove forward down the right and his dangerous delivery into the six-yard box was turned in by a defender.

Knutsford had chances to further their lead, mainly through Jenyons, with the substitute forcing Hull to save before hitting the post.
