CHAIRMAN Jimmy Evans admits he has taken a risk with his choice for Knutsford’s new bossr, but it’s one he is confident will pay off.

Reds announced on Monday that Scott Dignan’s first managerial appointment would be with them in the Cheshire League when they attempt to improve on finishing fifth in Division One last term.

“It’s a gamble because Scott is inexperienced but he’s impressed me with his passion,” said Evans.

“He’ll embrace our philosophy; he is disciplined, has a considered attitude for a young lad and will hopefully take the club forwards.”

Dignan replaces John Ferguson, who resigned at the end of last season.

A former youth team player at Stockport County, the defender is likely to spend more time on the touchline while he gets used to new surroundings at Manchester Road.

Evans said: “I’ve watched Scott play in several finals at Knutsford and each time was impressed with his manner and how he conducted himself.

“He’s capable of playing, but only will if we need him too.

“A newcomer to management has to start somewhere. He’s a winner, and I think has the qualities and character to succeed.”

Dignan has played at semi-professional level with Hyde, while most recently turned out for Knutsford’s league rivals Whaley Bridge.

He also helped Stockport-based Cale Green to win the Cheshire FA Sunday Cup, one of the finals played at Manchester Road that Evans refers to, last season.

He meets Knutsford’s squad for the first time at pre-season training next month.

Evans told the Guardian that Reds’ new manager is likely to recruit, but ruled out a revolution of the squad at Manchester Road.

He added: “I feel our success in recent seasons is partly due to the continuity we’ve enjoyed, so there’s not going to be a wholesale change.

“We’ve got the nucleus of a good group, but probably need two or three new faces to make us stronger.

“Scott has identified already players that might fit the bill.”
