TOM Jackson, from Mere, became the third winner of the Knutsford and District Amateur League’s Jack Tulley Young Player of the Year tournament on Sunday.

He took home the trophy, named after one of the league’s founder members, only in the closing stages of his head-to-head with defending champion Jake O’Neill, of Wilmslow Cons, at Mobberley.

It took the Mere man to the top of the group ahead of his clubmates Jack Bushell, Matthew Owen and Peter Jackson. “My dad would have been proud of the skill and tenacity shown by these young players,” said Bruce Tulley, Jack’s son, afterwards.

In Division One, leaders Mobberley A cruised to a whitewash of Wilmslow Cons B.

The visitors mustered only 132 points between them in a 7-0 defeat, the second lowest collective total in the league’s history.

Mobberley B strengthened their hold on second spot in the section’s match of the day, edging third-placed Wilmslow Cons A on aggregate. Elsewhere, back-markers Mobberley C pinched two points from Morley while Tatton defeated Brook Street by the same score.

Mere C, who recorded a first victory of the campaign in Division Two last week, repeated the trick to ruin Royal London’s chances of being promoted.

It leaves their opponents 14 points adrift of second-placed Mere B.

That will provide solace to Mere, who all but conceded the title to Shaw Heath B following a 5-2 defeat on their own table against the pacesetters.

Brook Street B racked up 328 points at Mobberley D, but still lost.

They took consolation though from Carl Prince’s run of 36 from a single visit to the table, the section’s best break to date.

Mere A lost at Wilmslow Cons C in the other match played.

n Results Week 22, Division One: Mobberley A 7 Wilmsow Cons B 0; Morley 5 Mobberley C 2; Tatton 5 Brook Street A 2; Wilmslow Cons A 3 Mobberley B 4.

Division Two: Mere B 2 Shaw Heath B 5; Mobberley D 4 Brook Street B 3; Royal London 1 Mere C 6; Wilmslow Cons C 5 Mere A 2.
