Knutsford 13 Congleton 17

KNUTSFORD could not close their 2013 home campaign with a win, instead suffering a narrow loss to neighbours Congleton.

After mounting pressure Blues took the lead when fly half Adam Elleray kicked a penalty from the 10-metre line.

The hosts were working well through lineouts and scrums before gaining a further penalty, duly converted by Elleray to establish a six-point lead.

Congleton hit back with a penalty of their own, but Knutsford continued to apply sustained possession that led to prop Richard Chambers crashing over for a try. Elleray added the extras, making it 13-3 at half time.

Knutsford came out on the attack after the break, but found the Congleton defence holding firm.

They were dealt a blow when they lost second row Hugh Davies to a shoulder injury, having already lost Jack Field.

The Knutsford pack came under attack and the visitors went over for a converted try to reduce the deficit to three points.

Full back Alex Wilson was sent to the sin bin late on for not rolling away, and Congleton’s numerical advantage eventually told when, with the last play of the game, they scored a converted try to seal victory Knutsford travel to Prenton, currently fourth, this Saturday.

Blues are seeking to add to their squad, which trains at Knutsford Academy every Thursday from 7.15pm.
