FOOTBALL: Knutsford draw despite taking the lead after just 60 seconds
DESPITE a first minute opener champions Knutsford were held at Gamesley on Saturday and remain second in the Cheshire County League Division One table.
Joe Woolley broke the deadlock within 60 seconds, but Gamesley levelled from the spot and Knutsford’s Dean Warburton was sent off late on.
Without regular midfield pair James Pickford and Lee Mannion, Knutsford made five changes following victory over Witton Albion Reserves with winger Joel Swift handed a debut. From kick off, Woolley received the ball on the edge of the Gamesley box, cutting inside and beating three defenders before calmly placing a shot into the bottom left hand corner.
Woolley and Warburton went close soon after as Reece Davies, Swift and Matt Woolley continued to cause problems for the Gamesley defence.
Knutsford stopper Mark Higgs was forced into a save on 20 minutes, but it was youngster Woolley at the other end who looked like extending the visitors’ lead, dancing through tackles on a number of occasions.
Steve Jenyons headed a free kick over, before Davies and Woolley combined to find Warburton only for the midfielder to fire over from distance.
But the hosts went into the break level when Keith Mairs was adjudged to have fouled a Gamesley forward in the box.
Higgs got finger tips to the resulting spot kick, but was unable to stop a powerful effort finding the bottom corner.
Five minutes after the break Warburton rattled a post from long range and 17-year-old Woolley’s curling shot was tipped over.
However, Warburton saw red, as did a Gamesley player, after a clash in the 89th minute as the sides ended with 10 men and one point each.
Knutsford have been paired with West Cheshire League Division One club Upton AA in the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup second round at Manchester Road on Saturday, Octpber 19, 2pm.
