CRICKET: Nasiri finds top form as Knutsford seconds finish the season in style
KNUTSFORD seconds celebrated promotion to the Cheshire Alliance fourth tier on Saturday, inspired by a match-winning display by Faizurahman Nasiri.
He returned figures of 6-31 from 10 overs, adding a catch and a run out to have a hand in eight of the wickets to fall as visitors Wilmslow Wayfarers thirds were dismissed for 131.
Skipper Neil Banks (2-15) chipped in too, claiming a fine one-handed catch at Mereheath Lane.
Ahmed Shohib (25no) laid a platform for victory in reply, leading runs-scorer Shake Shimul (48no) and Kamran Hussan (24no) sharing in an unbroken partnership worth 85 runs as the hosts reached their target at 132-2 in less than 30 overs.
Knutsford’s first team suffered a narrow one-wicket defeat at Tranmere Victoria in Division Two, leaving them seventh in the table.
Batting first on a damp track, they collapsed quickly to 15-6 before Adnan Ghazanfar (10) held up one end.
It was left to John Sheldon (15) and Zain Ali (18) to take the tally to 90.
Tranmere on course to win in no time as opener Gary Francis (28) scored quickly, only for captain Adam Clayton (5-50) and Ghazanfar (4-22) to put pressure on the home team. They were helped by Sheldon and John Sheridan, who claimed three catches each.
It was left to Tranmere’s last-wicket pair to scramble a victory at 91-9, the winning runs coming via a full toss edged through the slips.
Mobberley eased to a 68-runs win at lowly Prestbury in the Cheshire League’s top tier to secure a runners-up position behind champions Upton.
However their promotion party is on hold until after a decision to deduct a dozen points from their total as punishment for fielding a player in seven matches whose registration was incomplete is reviewed at a league meeting next week.
Northwich, along with Upton, have asked the league to set aside the penalty and sanction Mobberley instead for picking an ineligible individual.
