FOOTBALL: Rod inspires Reds
5:42pm Friday 30th August 2013 in Sport
KNUTSFORD moved to within touching distance of the Cheshire League Division One summit after a hard-fought win at Pilkington on Saturday.
Rod Thornley’s early strike proved enough for the visitors, although the ex-Altrincham forward was denied a second goal by a linesman later in the half.
It was hosts Pilkington who almost took the lead in the opening minutes, rattling the bar from close range after a mix-up in the Knutsford box.
With a quarter hour played, Knutsford goalkeeper Mark Higgs delivered a long goal-kick towards debutant Matthew Woolley who flicked on for Thornley to turn his defender and fire home from just inside the penalty area.
Pilkington were looking to exploit the strength of Lee Webber, whose aerial threat proved a constant problem for the champions.
At the other end, Joe Woolley’s clever pass sent in Thornley for another half chance while Lynch’s effort found the post via a Pilkington defender.
Half an hour in, Mannion’s swerving shot was parried by the Pilkington stopper and Thornley reacted quickest to slot home the loose ball only to be ruled offside.
Michael Jackson overlapped well to find Matthew Woolley, who cleverly back-heeled to brother Joe only for the forward to curl over.
Early in the second half Mannion again went close, clattering the woodwork after clever play from the younger Woolley.
Substitute Keith Mairs fed Woolley after 68 minutes, sending the teenager on a 40-yard dribble. He crossed to Thornley, who could find only the side netting.
Michael Schofield entered the scene with two minutes to play, and could have bagged a hat-trick after three quickfire chances.
Knutsford Higgs (GK), Jackson, Russell, Jenyons, Smart, Joe Woolley, Pickford, Mannion, Lynch (Mairs), Matthew Woolley (Steel), Thornley (Schofield). Sub not used Davies.
