CRICKET: Knutsford suffer against leaders
KNUTSFORD lost by seven wickets at home to champions-elect Port Sunlight in the Cheshire Alliance’s second tier, leaving them still hovering above the relegation zone.
The hosts, asked to bat, were dismissed for 80 with John Sheridan (16) at the top of the order and tail-ender Adeel Ahmed (14) the only batsmen to reach double figures.
David Scott and Gregory Moore (both 3-18) claimed three wickets apiece for the visitors.
With a small total to defend, Knutsford were grateful for John Sheldon (2-19) taking early wickets to give them hope.
But opener Brendan Woods (56no) defied the home team’s bowlers to steer the table-toppers to victory after a brief pause prompted by a rain shower.
Matt Clayton scored a maiden century for the club as Knutsford seconds shared the spoils with their Offerton counterparts on Saturday in Division Five East.
He contributed 109, including 14 fours and three sixes, to the visitors’ total of 218 after they were put in. Amir Shahzad (43) provided support.
Offerton had reached 22-2 in reply before rain stopped play.
