Knutsford players have chance to be part of Cheshire League success
12:50pm Friday 1st March 2013 in Sport
KNUTSFORD’S footballers will have a chance to win silverware with the Cheshire League’s representative team after they reached the North West Inter League Cup final.
Goalkeeper Mark Higgs and league player of the year Dean Warburton were called up for last Wednesday’s semi final second leg, although neither took part.
Cheshire thrashed their Lancashire & Cheshire League counterparts at Crewe, a 6-1 win contributing to a 7-1 success on aggregate.
“It’s great for everybody involved that we made it through,” said manager Steve Lloyd.
“The players delivered emphatically, although this performance showed a different side to what we are about.
“In the first leg we need to be resolute and wholehearted, while in the second it was about our desire to get the job done.”
Cheshire’s opponents took the lead in the second leg, restoring parity in the tie, before a five-goals burst from the hosts settled the outcome by half time.
Lee Morris, from Knutsford’s title rivals Whaley Bridge, converted a penalty before Eagle Sports striker Ged McAllister added a brace of goals.
Morris’ second, a volley from a free kick, followed before McAllister completed a first half hat-trick.
The front man scored his fourth goal of the game, Cheshire’s sixth, on the hour.
Lloyd added: “We can now look forward to the final knowing the challenge will be different.
“Whoever we face will be well-drilled, so we’ll need to focus on being prepared.”
Liverpool County Premier League or Manchester League will be their opponents in the final.
