KNUTSFORD’S rugby players ended their near year-long wait for a league win at the weekend.

Blues had not triumphed in a South Lancashire & Cheshire Division Three match since winning at Capenhurst last March, a sequence of 18 successive defeats.

Helsby were humbled 38-10 on Saturday.

The hosts did not look back after breaking the deadlock, a fine passing move ended with Sam Cook supplying a pass for Malcolm to score under the posts.

Fawcett added the extras.

Knutsford ran in three more tries before the break, Cook scoring twice and Dawson adding the other, two more conversions from Fawcett putting the home team 26-0 ahead.

Helsby reduced their arrears through a penalty and then a converted try, but it served only to spark the home team into life and they touched down twice more through Cook – completing his hat-trick – and Spencer.

One more conversion, from Fawcett, added gloss to a much-improved performance.

Knutsford will hope to repeat the trick when high-flying Port Sunlight visit the Academy this Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
