KNUTSFORD Tennis Club sends one of its rising stars to take on the best of the rest of the country next month.

Robert Read heads to London to take part in the national finals of the Powder Byrne Mini Tennis Trophy in his age group, a reward for winning a regional qualifier in Bolton earlier this month.

“He is one of a select few to make it,” said coach Mark Airey.

“This competition is one of the biggest in the Great Britain at the moment, so is a great opportunity for him to show what he can do.”

Robert, aged seven, is a pupil at Manor Park Primary School.

He came through a difficult group stage in the North of England & Scotland qualifier, going on to win three knockout head-to-heads to reserve a place at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.

There, he will compete in the U8s mini tennis category against boys and girls of the same age and standard.

Aireay said: “Robert has come through the ranks at Knutsford Tennis Club over the past couple of years as part of our juniors.

“He is now competing at national standard in Lawn Tennis Association competitions around the country.

“He has already been a winner in many county and regional events, showing real signs of potential.”

The final takes place in London on Saturday, December 8.
