THE children of Goostrey Primary School got ready for their upcoming Rainbow exhibition by making a spectrum of colourful food.

Every class prepared recipes which reflected the colours of the rainbow under the guidance of Isabella Smith, a home economist who lives in Goostrey.

In the run-up to the Rainbow show, on October 9 and 10, each class has been allocated a colour, and the children are busily researching and preparing exhibits which reflect this.

By using brightly-coloured ingredients such as beetroot, spinach and blueberries, the pupils were able to make different shaded food such as hummus and smoothies.

Head teacher Lyndsey Atkins said: “Each year Goostrey Primary School has a major exhibition to which all the children contribute, and the whole hall is a showcase for their work.

“This year our theme is the rainbow, and the children were fascinated to find our how colours play such a big part in the food they eat.”

Isabella Smith, who is helping schools to deliver the new national curriculum which puts greater emphasis on food, said: “Children love cooking, and the rainbow is a fantastic theme as it gives the children an opportunity to study the close links between food and various colours.

“The rainbow also underlines the healthy eating message which encourages us to eat five colourful fruit and vegetables a day.

"The Government is putting far more importance on children learning about food and how to prepare it, but not all schools are geared up for this, so I hope I will be able to help deliver this important part of the curriculum.”
