Jodrell Side WI by Pat Alston

Jodrell Side WI's 45th birthday party was a great success .The buffet was superb thanks to all the ladies who contributed and especially Sheila Wood who made the delicious birthday cake. Several visitors also joined in the celebrations and a vote of thanks was given by Anne Maddox a visitor from Smallwood WI.

The speaker for the night was Peter Sykes, a retired surgeon who proceeded to perform a gall bladder “operation” ably assisted by Pat Ingram and Dagmar Barnes whom he had dressed in attire suitable for the operating theatre. Needles to say all this was done with a great degree of hilarity.

Shirley Britten cut the birthday cake while two renderings of “Happy Birthday” were sung, one for Jodrell Side and one for Shirley as it had been her birthday that week too.

The usual business was conducted with news of various forthcoming events including the announcement that the Queen will be attending the AGM in the Albert Hall this year along with Princess Anne, the Duchess of Wessex and Josie Sykes. Many members had attended the group meeting which was a highly entertaining interpretation of the life of Agatha Christie illustrated by costumes of the era modelled by two very enthusiastic narrators.

Pat Alston along with Sylvia Bastain, in her capacity as a committee member for the Cheshire Show, were among 8000 other ladies who attended the garden party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 100 years anniversary of the WI. It was a wonderful sight to see so many smartly dressed members representing the

organisation even though it was a windy day and many ladies were kept on their toes chasing wayward hats along the lawns.

The date for the “Street Party” mentioned in last months report has now been changed to September 19.
