AFTER welcoming members and a guest, president Helen Ebbitt read out Phil Gifford’s letter regarding the Memorial Wildflower Walk. An inaugural service will be held at Norley Church on June 7, to commemorate eleven men from Norley who died in the First World War. Wild flowers have been planted at set points to form a memorial walk.

Plaques at the set points will commemorate their lives. The lottery funding bid for the walk was unsuccessful and donations would be welcome. Norley WI members are sponsoring a plaque in memory of David Thomas Malcolm. If you would like to make a donation please contact Sheila Hills on Sheila@sheilahills.plus.com.

This year’s national resolution is 'Failing to Care - Assessment of Need in Long Term Care.'

Lively discussion took place and members talked of their own experiences of dealing with the different levels of care. It was agreed that changes to the assessment system were needed.

Due to what some felt was a lack of clarity on the detail of the proposal, nearly half the meeting abstained from voting. The president made clear that abstentions would need to be taken as a “no” vote, as she would not be allowed to abstain at the forthcoming WI AGM. With this in mind, the final vote was nine for and 15 against.

The guest speaker was Jane Langdon, who volunteers for the Wirral and Chester Riding for the Disabled Group. She spoke about 'Riding with people with disabilities'.

With great humour and compassion she explained the many benefits that disabled riders of all ages and levels of disability receive from riding. The groups motto is: “If we can get the person on a horse, the person can ride”. She also pointed out the many challenges that the charity faces.

Norley WI made a donation of £60 to this good cause
