THE High Legh WI Sunday Tea at High Legh Village Hall proved extremely popular once again, with a steady stream of visitors enjoying a fine spread of homemade sponge cakes, meringues, sandwiches, scones, pastries and tray bakes. WI hospitality has a well-deserved reputation, with visitors coming from as far away as Australia.

Members thoroughly enjoyed Stepping Out at The Garrick Theatre, Altrincham, and plan to storm the gates of Skipton Castle. Trips organiser, Marilyn Ridler has arranged for visits to Gawsworth and Chester in July and the National Arboretum in August.

The walking group visit Anderton Boat Lift and Marbury Country Park on June 2. The book club is reading Maxwell’s Island. There was a briefing on fracking from the WI Public Affairs group.

Several members were encouraged to discover the pleasures of embroidery by the enthusiastic craft group. Their embroidered bunting and banner to mark the WI centenary has had contributions from more than 15 people.

Craft projects this month have been to create quilts to comfort children at a local women’s refuge and beanie hats for the people who are suffering in Nepal.

There was a discussion about the national WI resolution that the arbitrary distinction between health and social care be removed. Personal experiences of people 'falling through the gap' were described by members. Some recounted harrowing experiences when they have had to cope, without any practical support, when elderly parents or partners were discharged from hospital. Evidence from members personal experiences shows that, although sometimes care provision can work well, all too often the current arrangements can be both ineffective and unfair.

The motion was agreed unanimously.

Meetings are at 7.30pm on the second Tuesday of the month at High Legh village hall. Visitors are welcome.
