OVER Peover WI members have been busy making their banner for the celebration of the WI centenary.

President June Leech thanked all the members who had contributed.

She attended a president’s meeting at Christleton, and took the banner and the bunting. They will be displayed at the Cheshire Federation WI 95th birthday celebration at Gawsworth Hall and again at the Cheshire Show.

Sue Newhouse who helped and advised the team of seamstresses was thanked and presented with a gift.

The Cheshire Show has featured a lot in recent meetings. Members are being encouraged to enter and have volunteered for stewarding and refreshment duties.

A recent guided tour of the Free Trade Hall and the Central Library in Manchester with a friendly lunch in between was a great success. Members volunteered to help man the WI Knutsford group exhibition at the Heritage Centre at the beginning of August.

The planting up of the tubs at the village hall was organised and a rota for watering them throughout the summer. They make the hall look much more attractive.

Members have recently enjoyed talks entitled ‘Reluctant Heroes’ which Tony Davies delivered dressed as a First World War soldier; ‘Working with the Homeless’ from police officer Judith Walmsley who spoke with warmth and enthusiasm and Ben Alexander spoke about ‘Cheshire’s Mary Fitton’ of Gawsworth Hall and the controversy surrounding whether or not she was “The Dark Lady of Shakespeare’s sonnets”.

There was no shortage of volunteers to make cakes and floral table arrangements for the fundraising tea party on May 26 at 2.30pm at Over Peover Village Hall.

They have again engaged the Rev Michael Burgess to give his amusing talk about marriage entitled ‘For Better or Worse’. Guests are most welcome.
