Pickmere & District WI by Kathryn Whitlow

The recent meeting of the Pickmere & District WI was opened by President Joyce Kirkpatrick with a warm welcome to new members, Susan Ollier and Sheila Martin.

Members were made aware of food allergens such as celery, eggs and nuts and that any food provided at meetings will have to be clearly labelled stating the ingredients. Members were asked to vote on whether they agree, or disagree that third party insurance should be compulsory for motorised mobility scooter drivers. Every one voted in favour.

Rev Canon Michael Burgess was the speaker for the evening with a talk entitled ‘For Better for Worse’. Within his talk he included the various themed weddings which are becoming quite popular. Depending on the theme it may involve the bride and groom dressing up in costume, to taking their vows under water for example. By the end of the talk, members were crying with laughter. A vote of thanks was given by Sue MacMillan.

Refreshments were provided by Jean Whitlow and Marjorie Broady, followed by the announcement of the competition winners, a tip for a happy marriage: 1. Kathryn Whitlow; 2. Sandra Crook; 3. Joyce Kirkpatrick. The winner of the raffle was Susan Ollier.

The next meeting will be March 25 when the speaker will be Samantha Smith, with a talk entitled ‘Exotic Pet Rescue’. The competition will be for a photograph of a pet.
