Goostrey WI

By Sheila Thomlinson

President Marilyn Lloyd welcomed members and visitors to the 1009th meeting of Goostrey WI. Everyone observed a minute’s silence to remember past President Mary Hooley who had recently died.

Barbara Foster was the speaker for the evening, with, “When did Mick Jagger sleep here?” The title of her talk was prompted by a question asked by a visitor to Dunham Massey, where Barbara worked as a Steward. The visitor had overheard a conversation incorrectly. Barbara worked for the National Trust at Dunham Massey for 23 years, 15 of which were shared with her late husband. She told many humorous stories, explaining that the her first years there were spent in the kitchens, dealing with children, well suited considering she was a retired School Head of an infant department. She said that her work for the National Trust had opened up many possibilities, and was a most interesting time. Sue Edwards thanked her.

Dorothy Warburton won the competition and Norah Relph the raffle.

Next month’s meeting will be on Wednesday, November 19. This will be the AGM and the guest speaker is Ray Elkes with his talk about “The Secrets of Spode”. Visitors are welcome.

The Christmas Party will be on Wednesday, December 17, and will be held in Goostrey Village Hall.
