High Legh WI

Norma Wright welcomed everyone, plus five guests from Lymm Jubilee WI, to the October meeting of High Legh WI. The members from Lymm wanted to join in to hear speaker Brian Hallworth’s talk, “Not through the front door (you don’t)”. They had heard him speak before, and once Brian began his talk, which he accompanied with slides, it became clear why. Explaining the origins of all the sayings we know and use, like “Burning the candle at both ends”, and “Over the Thresh hold” plus many more, it proved to be a most fascinating and inspiring talk.

Flowers this month were given to Tricia Jones, and Mary Jones, no relation, who both have fractured limbs. Norma reported that the Sunday teas and tombola had been successful, enabling Treasurer Pat Sutton to subsidise the Christmas meal to be held at Statham Lodge in December.

Two successful outings had been organised by Marilyn Ridler. The first was to Belgium, with a canal cruise, brewery trip and a visit to Ruben’s house in Antwerp. The second was to The Lowry to see the Ballet, “Beauty and the Beast”. The walking group were taken by leader Julie Rogers on a five mile walk to Wilmslow and walked along the River Bollin to Quarry Bank, finishing with a pub meal. Thanks were given to Pam Higham and Gwen Smith for organising the Craft Group, who are in the process of making a patchwork quilt.

Norma then reported on her visit to the Annual Meeting at Winsford.

Jill Murray won the competition for “An old wives tale”.

The next meeting will be the AGM on November 11, in High Legh Village Hall at 7.30pm.
