PRESIDENT Virginia Williamson welcomed members to the September meeting of Plumley WI.

Since the last meeting members have been busy raising money through well attended events such as a coffee morning and a garden party.

An afternoon visit to Grappenhall Heys walled garden was much enjoyed, as were walks in Pickmere.

Future events include a water colour painting course on September 10, and a theatre trip to see “The Ladykillers” on September 16.

A walk in Tatton Park has been planned for September 18, and the darts team will resume their practice for upcoming competitions on September 19.

A Christmas outing to Gawsworth is also planned, details to follow.

Hugh Davies was the speaker, with his fascinating talk about female spies, saboteurs and resistance fighters from ancient times through to the modern day.

From Boudicca’s uprising against the Romans to the work of women who were active during the First World War, such as Mata Hari, Gertrude Bell and Josephine Baker, who worked as part of the Resistance during the Second World War.

Janice Jackson won this month’s competition and Betty Jones was the winner of the bloom competition.

The next meeting will be on October 6, with guest speaker Keith Vigurs, who will be talking about canal restoration.

The competition will be a canal picture.

New members and guests are welcome.
