THERE was a good attendance at the April meeting of Lower Withington WI.

The chairman began by asking for help at the cream tea event to be held at the home of Barbara and Bill Hides on Saturday, May 17. Raffle prizes, cakes, good as new, bottles and jars for the various stalls were also requested.

Names were then taken for the proposed trip and guided tour of Chatsworth House on July 16.

Barrister Tim Brunnand was introduced as the speaker. Tim, a member of Grays Inn of Court, works in the Northern Circuit and Wales. He deals in criminal law and has prosecuted and defended many high profile cases.

He gave a potted history of how the legal profession progressed to what it has become today, and then about cases he has dealt with, some of which were much in the public eye but also about the inner workings of the court and its little idiosyncrasies.

The term Silk is used for Barristers because their gowns are made of silk; junior members are known as Stuffs, which is a lower quality material.

Wendy Stoddart won the competition for a Toby Jug, as well as the Royal Memorabilia competition for the group meeting.

The next meeting is on May 28, when David Tideswell will give a talk on garden birds in spring. The competition will be a bird.

Meetings are held in Lower Withington Parish Hall, at 7.30pm, and visitors are welcome.
