Paralympic sailing medallist Niki is made a freeman of the borough

PARALYMPIAN Niki Birrell was honoured at his homecoming parade in Knutsford on Friday.

The sailor, who won bronze in the Skud class, toured the town in a BMW convertible waving to residents before heading to the civic centre on Toft Road for a reception.

Cheshire East Mayor Clr George Walton announced that Niki would be made a freeman of the borough and have a road named after him – Niki Birrell Way.

Earlier Niki had visited High Legh Primary School to show pupils his medal.

Niki told the Guardian: “It’s absolutely unbelievable to have my own road name and I still can’t quite believe that someone is going to live in Niki Birrell Way, so that’s amazing and a big honour.

“In terms of what next, I will just enjoy life and see what’s out there, but I might do a bit of travelling and maybe try and make a bit of money in other ways like an online business.”

Niki’s Parents Mark, 57, and Sally, 55, both live in High Legh, and told the Guardian how proud they were of their son.

“You don’t expect these sort of things for normal people,” Mark said.

“He started sailing with his brother Christian, and without him Niki wouldn’t be where he is today, he is a great support for him.”

Sally said: “It was very emotional for me, and when you get told your child has cerebral palsy it is devastating, but Niki has put in so much effort to do what he has achieved. The whole family is immensely proud of what Niki has achieved.”
