Surgeon backs eye charity

A LEADING eye surgeon travelled 5,000 miles to help train doctors in Africa.

Say Aun Quah, 43, of Woodside, Knutsford, passed on his cataract surgery techniques to a team in Ghana as part of an Eye Aid for Africa charity initiative.

Mr Quah and his colleague Mark Neugebauer from Spire Regency’s hospital in Macclesfield assisted doctors at Konfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Mr Quah, who also works at Leighton Hospital and Macclesfield Hospital, introduced them to modern eye surgery techniques used in the UK for the past 20 years.

“The wound created with this method of cataract removal is much smaller, meaning there is less discomfort for the patient,” said Mr Quah.

“It also leads to a quicker recovery time and patients can see much sooner – often within 24 hours compared to up to a week or longer with the older methods of cataract surgery.”
