CHELFORD residents decided to abseil down their church over the bank holiday weekend to raise funds for the parish.

As well as having their church open for afternoon teas on each Sunday in August, the vicar of St John’s Church in Chelford, Rev Malcolm Shaw, organised a sponsored abseil from the tower on Sunday, with the help of Colin Brookes, a professional steeplejack.

More than 100 people of all ages enjoyed a sunny afternoon, sustained by tea, coffee and home made cakes, while watching 15 intrepid souls who, led by the vicar, descended the south face of the tower to cheers.

Churchwardens Sue Roycroft, descended twice in a Scooby Doo costume, having been challenged to do so for an increased sponsorship.

The others who abseiled were the Rev Malcolm Shaw, Abi Shaw, Mary Haworth, Barry Tyre, Hilda Lowe, Roseanna McBrin, Theo Stewart, Austin Ambrose, Lysianne Gilmore, Sarah Lumb, Jeremy Hague, Georgina Rendell, Miles Rendell and Mike Hampton.

The sponsorships raised funds towards the church, new choir robes, and restoration of the village handbells.
