PUPILS at Knutsford Academy performed above the national average in this year’s GCSE exams as a debate raged over how this year’s papers were marked.

Students collected their GCSE results on Thursday morning at the school and staff said the statistics showed a ‘continuing upward trend’.

This year 99 per cent of students achieved at least five A*-G grades, while 94 per cent of students achieved five grades of A*-C. The top grades increased, with A* grades being five per cent higher than the national average.

Core subjects produced some very encouraging results, with 73 per cent of students achieving A*-C in English – Knutsford Academy is 10 per cent ahead of national statistics – while 76 per cent of students achieved A*-C in maths, which is 17 per cent ahead of national statistics.

Principal Kevin Hollins said the school remained ‘well above’ the national averages.

“Standards have risen consistently over the past three years, and are remaining well above national averages during this period,” he said.

“The students have worked hard and we are delighted with their results.”

Mark Gartland, vice-principal and head of school, said: “I am very proud the high attainment and achievement recognised by OFSTED has been maintained by this year’s cohort.

“I would like to congratulate the students, and I am pleased their results will enable them to follow their chosen pathways for the future.”

Phil Benson, 16, of Cranford Avenue, Knutsford, said he would be staying at the school to carry on into the sixth form.

“I’ve always presumed I was going to stay here, but it’s far too early to know what I am going to do after,” he said.

Gemma Jorgensen, from Bowdon, will be studying English literature, history, chemistry and business at the Academy in September, but admitted she had looked elsewhere.

“I’ve chosen a mix of subjects, but I’m looking at doing English literature at university,” she said.

“I was looking at going elsewhere, but this is the best place to come in terms of getting into university.”

Tom Hoater, 16, from Winsford, said he would also be staying on at the Academy’s sixth form.

“I’m coming back to Knutsford, but it’s because I know this place and I know the people,” he said.

“My brother and sister did very well here, and I know I will get good grades by staying. I’m still very unsure what I want to do in the future, but being an author or journalist is something I’d like to do as I like writing.”
