Speed of Sight fundraiser

WALKERS turned out in force to High Legh Golf Club on July 20 to ‘walk in the dark’ and in turn raise funds for the Speed of Sight charity.

The walk was the idea of the SOS team and its front man, Mike Newman, the holder of three world blind land speed records.

Martin, together with Martin Keenan, an engineer from Yorkshire, and Tameside College students, have designed and are ready to build the first of 10 cars which will allow people with varying disabilities the thrill of a track day experience.

The money raised from the walk will get the scheme off the ground and further walks are planned.

The next one at High Legh, thanks to the generosity of its new owner Tony Vaughan, is on September 30.

Mike said: “I am overwhelmed by the response to the idea and what we achieved.

“All the participants confirmed that they now feel more comfortable about approaching someone with a disability who looks like they need assistance, and are far more relaxed about offering help.”
