HOLMES Chapel village centre closed for more than an hour when a low-loader broke down on the double roundabout.

The lorry was carrying a transformer to Stafford for refurbishment when an axle broke at about 2pm on Sunday.

Eye-witness Jo Green said: “There were police cars everywhere blocking the traffic off. People were watching from all over the place.

“Some of the residents were angry as they believe that the road is too narrow for this kind of load.

“Certainly it was very close - within inches to the garden and shop walls at one stage and had to travel very slowly.

“But these lorries have been coming this way since the middle of the last century and I think they're amazing.”
