WORK to build a new supermarket in Knutsford will begin in September, according to the firm behind the plans.

Aldi’s bid to build a store in the town has been held up in various ways since the proposal was put forward in the summer of 2009.

It was due to open in 2010 but the delay resulted in the site, at the back of Knutsford Day Nursery, becoming run-down, and concerns have been raised by residents on more than one occasion.

But this week the German-firm said it would be starting work on the site in early September.

An Aldi spokesman stressed the firm was focused on maintaining the site before building work begins.

“We are extremely keen to start work on our Knutsford site, and are disappointed that our plans haven’t progressed as quickly as we intended,” he said.

“We are working closely with the planning authority on our scheme, and subject to completion of the Section 106 and Section 278 agreements, are aiming to start work on site in early September.

“While we await feedback, we are progressing work where possible.

“We have pruned foliage on the site to ensure adjacent walkways are kept clear.

“In addition we are completing an ecology survey to determine when we can further prune trees and avoid any impact on birds during the nesting season.

“We will continue to properly maintain the site, and look forward to welcoming the residents of Knutsford to Aldi in the near future.”
