Mobberley celebrates 90th Rose Queen festival

MOBBERLEY turned out in force to celebrate its 90th Rose Queen festival on Saturday.

Despite the weather’s best efforts, the festival was again hailed a great success.

With the procession – led by Megan Cookson – staying dry, and later on the dancers on the field able to dance between the occasional shower, the show went on.

The procession featured eight floats, a London bus, pipe and brass bands, Mobberley’s junior and senior Morris Dancers and Ringheye Morris Dancers all taking part for the new Rose Queen Grace Hasleden, and her attendants Leah Black and Lucy Britland.

A highlight saw 1935 Queen Betty Blease and 1938’s Marjorie Goostrey sharing the float with 15 past queens.

The childrens’ traditional dances under Joy Parkes guiding hand saw the youngest group dancers the festival has had, skilfully mastering all the traditional Morris dances.

Tony Cooke, chairman of the festival, said: “Hats off to the people in and around Mobberley who came out and helped make it such a great success. The whole village supported it.”

Musketeers: Jamie Sawyer, Luis Ordonez and Cody Collins.

The Jubilee theme was carried by England – Holly Wheeler, Ireland – Mia Corrie, Scotland – Cameron McIntosh and Wales – Abigail Thompson.

John Bull: Rory O Connor.

The Village Wedding consisted of Bride Groom: Oscar Fogg, Best Man: Alex Grassby, Parson: Joseph Grassby and Petal thrower: Eva Wilson and Hannah Asworth Other characters included Maid Marion: Antonia Young, Lilly Green: Cecelia Ordonez and Robin Hood: Will Lord.
