KNUTSFORD’S air cadets are opening their doors in a bid to welcome new members.

The Knutsford Air Cadet Squadron (2056) has decided to welcome youngsters and their parents to visit the squadron to see what it’s all about The open evening will take place on February 9, from 7.30pm to 9pm at the headquarters on Blackhill Lane – between Bexton Primary and the Scout hut.

For young people, male and female, aged 13 or over, keen on aviation, action, adventure, sports and getting to know people, this is for you.

Cadets will be expected to take a pride in their uniform and appearance, be well mannered and self disciplined – they will be joining something to be proud of.

Cadets gain valuable life skills and nationally recognised awards that will be useful in any career they follow.

They can add to their school academic achievements with Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards – and currently, three BTEC Diplomas - Aviation Studies, Public Service and Music.

Coupled with these awards is a range of activities – flying, gliding, shooting, climbing, camping, residential visits, all sports, social events – that cadets can take part in.

Candice Reeves, instructor at the 2056 squadron, said: “The ATC uses military-orientated training to build self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and a sense of service to the community.

“It provides young people with a sense of responsibility and commitment, as well as offering a vast array of experiences and the opportunity to learn new skills.

“After all, not all their mates could claim they have been involved in music, flying, gliding, DofE, adventure weekends, night exercises and sport.

“The list is endless so don't think it is all about one thing and one thing only, it’s not.

“Not all cadets join because they want a career with the Royal Air Force or aerospace industry – it is not a recruiting organisation for the services – there are almost as many reasons to join as there are members.”

Cadet membership is open to youngsters between 13 and 17 years old and they can stay on until they are 20.

The open evening will consist of a presentation by Squadron staff followed by an informal question and answer session.

There will also be the chance to meet serving cadets and talk to them about their experiences within the ATC.
