United Utilities to spend £65,000 to stop leaks that affect part of Plumley

UNITED Utilities will spend £65,000 to stop water leaks that have affected part of a village near Knutsford.

Bosses said they would begin replacing the water main in Plumley on October 26, and the job is expected to take up to three months.

“We can now focus our efforts on delivering these essential improvements,” said project engineer Brian Jenkins.

The work will take place between Plumley Moor Road’s junction with the A556 near The Smoker pub and the junction with Trouthall Lane.

Experts plan to replace 800 metres of an old water main with a modern plastic pipe.

They will use cutting-edge engineering techniques to minimise road excavations where possible.

The junction of the A556 and Plumley Moor Road will have to be closed during part of the work.

United Utilities and Cheshire East Council have not yet agreed when that will take place or for how long.

However, bosses are planning to close the junction in January to avoid congestion during Christmas.

“Once it has been agreed, the closure will be well-publicised, as will the resulting diversion routes,” said Mr Jenkins.

Plumley had been blighted by another flooding fiasco last weekend.

A leak on Plumley Moor Road caused the water pressure to plummet and temporarily cut off the supply for many residents.

At the time – before United Utilities’ announcement – villagers said they were frustrated that the problem had persisted for years.

“What do we have to do to get action? All we want is water,” said Andy Holmes, of Plumley Moor Road.

“The residents are sick and tired of the same length of pipe failing from the Smoker pub to the centre of Plumley.”

During the same week, there was also a major leak on Middlewich Road at Swan Green in Lower Peover which gushed water onto the road for three days.

Christian Ewen, spokesman for United Utilities, said: "We would like to offer our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience this has caused.”
