A CANNABIS farm with hundreds of plants was this week uncovered in a street where some houses cost more than £2million.

More than 15 police descended on a six-bedroomed detached home in Mereside Road, Mere, on Monday.

Officers arrested two Vietnamese men, aged 20 and 29, on suspicion of cultivating drugs and being illegal immigrants.

On Tuesday police also said a local 41-year-old man and 48-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the production of class B drugs.

“At the moment we believe the number of cannabis plants being farmed at the property to be in excess of 1,000,” said Inspector Kate Woods, of the police station in Toft Road, Knutsford.

“Officers are currently investigating the circumstances behind the cultivation of these plants and how the individuals concerned came to be at the property.”

Police said they received a tip-off about the cannabis farm from a local resident.

Officers raided the house at about 4.30pm.

“We would like to thank local residents for their vigilance and support during this investigation,” said Inspector Woods.

Yesterday, as the Guardian went to press, police were still at the house.

They were expected to stay at the property until at least yesterday evening.

“The address was contained by us for searches and removal,” said a police spokesman.
