IT was once again a case of weighing up the competitors this past weekend as two Gooseberry shows showcased the best of the growers in the region.

At the Allostock Gooseberry Society show held on Saturday, August 1, one man nearly completed a clean sweep of the eight trophies on offer.

Jim Hart dominated the day at The Drovers Arms as he walked away with six trophies, including the cup for the most points gained in the colour berry classes and the champion show plate for his Montrose variety.

Ian Booth claimed the top prize for the heaviest premium berry with his Millennium variety weighing in at an impressive 34 pennyweights and one grain.

It was a similar scene at the Ye Olde Parkgate Inn, in Lower Peover, as Noel Street secured six of the 14 prizes on offer at the Parkgate Gooseberry Show.

His haul included the trophy for the most points, heaviest twins, heaviest white premium berry and most points in colours only – a trophy that was named in memory of Noel’s late wife, Jean.

Rick Okill went home with the trophy for the heaviest premium berry, weighing in at 27 pennyweights and 22 grains. He also picked up the trophy for the heaviest Woodpecker Premium berry.

Keith Knowles, secretary of the Parkgate Show, said: “It was a really good day, particular for Noel who, being the oldest member of the club, did really well.

“The thing that was nice was that in the evening presentation Noel was presented with the trophy that was dedicated to his wife Jean, by his daughter.

“It’s the first time he has won it as well.”

The show also donated a cheque to Stockport-based charity ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ in the evening presentation.
