Pickmere cyclist to cross Pyrenees on ten-day challenge

A CYCLIST from Pickmere will cross the Pyrenees on a gruelling 800 kilometre, ten day challenge.

Andrew Wright, 47, will cycle from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean coast, traversing the Pyrenees on the way.

“It’s going to be hard but a lot of fun,” said Andrew, of Pickmere Lane, a part-time youth hostel warden.

He has been planning the trip since he heard about the Raid Pyrénéen from a fellow traveller in Marrakesh in 2007.

“The idea took hold in my mind and I’ve been planning to do it ever since though I had to put it off last year due to illness,” he added.

This will be the 50th tour he has been on in his 23 years of cycling – during this time Andrew has passed through 25 countries all over the world.

“The most adventurous places I’ve visited were Sri Lanka and Israel – I went round the Sea of Galilee and passed through the Gaza Strip.

“The most scenic was Norway, I went there in the summer and it was just beautiful,” he said.

Andrew will set off for France on Friday and will start off from the port of Hendaye on Sunday.

Although he has done little training for the ride, Andrew has kept fit by completing walking challenges.
