Tennis: Review of Week One

GREY skies loomed over Hartford all afternoon but the village's tennis players shone on court.

Cheshire Shield action began again on Sunday with Hartford securing a comfortable 3-1 victory over visiting Prestbury.

Playing the first knockout match on the new astroturf at the Chester Road club, captain James Barlow and Andrew Moores won both matches with Keith Wright and Dave Glenn winning their first match of the day.

CUDDINGTON and Sandiway teams enjoyed a super start to the season, recording wins for across the club.

The Men's A avenged a winter league defeat against Hightown A in the Slazenger South and Mid Cheshire League Division Two.

In their first match together, Simon Nuttall and Alex King secured all four of their sets while Damian Cookson and Chris Bott added the extras.

In Division Four, veteran pair Russ Smith and Frances Evans took two sets in the C team's clash with Hartford D while Captain Nick Lyon, partnered by promising junior Jack Jordan-Bell, drew with Hartford's strong first couple before picking up a win against the second pair.

Newly promoted Alsager provided a tough first challenge for Cuddington Ladies A quartet.

A solid performance by twins Janet and Julia Worrall produced three sets, supported by a strong showing by captain Lindsey Cochrane and Janice Callaway, picking up two further sets to secure the win.

TENNIS players in Winsford enjoyed mixed fortune in the opening week of the season.

The Men's A team, consisting of Dave Jones, Dave Littler, Mark Abbiss and Richard Clorley, got off to a winning start, edging Nantwich A 4.5-3.5 at Knights Grange in their South and Mid Cheshire League Division One clash.

In Division Three, the Men's B team went down 5-3 at Holmes Chapel.

Chris Mayoh, Jamie Garratt, Neil Garratt and Steve Abbiss made up their quartet.
