A MAN is in hospital with life threatening injuries after a crash in the early hours of today, Tuesday.

The M6 has now reopened northbound between Lymm and Knutsford after the crash involving two Mercedes Sprinter vans.

It took place around 3am two miles from Lymm services and the road, between junction 19 and junction 20, remains closed.

Police, fire crews and ambulance attended.

Police say one passenger has been taken to the Salford Royal Hospital with life threatening injuries. His condition is described as critical.

The driver of one of the vehicles, a 34-year-old man from Blackburn, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He is currently in custody being questioned by officers.

Police say there is currently seven miles of queueing traffic in the area.

Investigation work was completed around 6.15am but recovery work is ongoing at the scene although is expected to finish soon.

Diversions are in place.
