MORE than 135 primary school children battled temperatures in the high 20s today to complete the 2018 Smart Financial Canute Kids Duathlon.

The event was held at Egerton Youth Club and comprised four run-bike-run events and a fun run.

“It was another super event and the way the children performed in that heat was so inspirational,” said organiser Vicky McKinnon of Knutsford.

The numbers taking part were up on 2018, which forced organisers to alter their plans.

“We had to split one of the age groups into two races because there were so many children wanting to take part," said fellow organiser Helen Murray.

Amy Roberts from Knutsford Triathlon Club and Ethan Davies of North Cheshire Clarion were the winners in the Years 6 to 7 race.

Millie Burchall put on an incredible display to finish second overall behind boy’s winner Zack Cocksedge in the Years 4 to 5 race.

Elsie Suthard and Knutsford Triathlon Club’s Edward Thomas won the Years 1 to 3 race.

Farah Armitage completed the 1km fun run despite having had open heart surgery two years ago, while her older brother Brodie did his first duathlon.

“My children were probably the smallest two competitors taking part, but it was such an awesome day,” said their proud dad Dave Armitage.

Financial planning company Smart Financial contributed to the running costs of the races, and chief executive Steve Martin travelled from Spain to present the prizes.

“It’s such a fantastic initiative to help promote an active lifestyle for boys and girls and we are so proud to be associated with such a brilliant local event,” he said.
