VILLAGERS lined the streets on Saturday to greet Mobberley Rose Queen Annie Barker.

The 12-year-old Knutsford Academy student was the star of this year’s Mobberley Rose Festival, which was praised for the community support it attracted from residents and businesses alike.

“It was a fabulous day,” said festival committee joint chairman Laura Leighton.

“We had a lots of community support, and lots of people lined the route of the procession.

“The festival is full of tradition, and people really get behind it, especially the school, which really gets involved.

“It costs £4,000 to put the festival on, and I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work and dedication, as well as the residents for their support and local businesses for sponsoring us.”

Annie’s mum Sarah said: “Annie had a fabulous day – she loved wearing the dress and seeing the community come together.

“She knows a lot of people in Mobberley, and is looking forward to representing the village at other events over the next 12 months.”

The procession, which included floats and a pipe band, started from the Victory Hall and continued through the village before returning to the Scout hut at Hall Bank, where Annie was crowned, accompanied by her ladies-in-waiting Liberty Yates and Kiki Shepherd.

The entertainment included Morris, maypole and hornpipe dancing by children from the village, and the fancy dress competition and best dressed house and float were judged by festival president Ken Davies and retiring queen Maisie Purcell.

The raffle is the biggest source of funds on the day, and raised £1,200 this year.

Following the festival a free disco and barbecue were held at The Railway Inn in Station Road from 5pm to 11pm, featuring DJ Pete Deane.
