RAIL passengers face disruption in May with further industrial action announced.

Members of the RMT union will walk out for 24 hours on Wednesday, May 9.

The strike is the latest in the union’s dispute with Northern Rail over the future role of train guards.

Rail operators want to withdraw guards and introduce driver-only operation, but RMT chiefs have voiced safety fears.

?RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “We are drawing attention to the ludicrous situation that means we are able to reach agreements in Wales and Scotland on the guard guarantee but not on a raft of key franchises in England.

“If it’s good enough for Wales and Scotland to put rail safety first then it should be good enough for the rest of Britain.”

Mr Cash added that RMT ‘remains available for genuine and meaningful talks’ with the franchise.

Union members marched on parliament yesterday, Wednesday, to mark two years since the dispute began.
