RHS Flower Show organisers are promising the scary and spectacular this summer among an array of new attractions.

From July 18 to 22, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Flower Show Tatton Park, supported by Bruntwood, returns to the park with a bumper year to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary.

For the first time, the show invites visitors to step inside ‘The Poisonous Garden’ and discover the gruesome and deadly nature of some of the UK’s best-loved plants.

Daring visitors can surround themselves with peril as plants and flowers drip from the ceiling in the ‘poison tunnel’ or get lured in by pretty plants with a hidden deadly charm, such as toxic foxgloves and Angel’s Trumpet, which if ingested causes its victim to drift into a fatal sleep.

Showgoers will have the chance to get dangerously close to carnivorous plants and their prey and learn more about the myths and folklore surrounding our ancient flora.

Created by the RHS and Gold medal-winning designers Warnes McGarr, the plants will be safely housed in reused shipping containers.

Talks, tours and demonstrations will take place throughout the show from poisonous plant expert Michael Brown and ‘Mr Plant Geek’ Michael Perry.

Visitors will be offered a picture-perfect opportunity to walk through a huge sunshine field of more than 5,000 Rudbeckia hirta Prairie Sun arranged in the shape of their extra-large daisy-like flower.

Also known as ‘Black-Eyed Susan’, this bright yellow flower with its ray like petals and dark centre will be grown by Coventry-based Baginton Nurseries.

New for 2018, The Flower School offers a creative, hands-on experience with an array of talks and workshops on everything floral from flower crowns to growing your own cut flower patch.

Florists and nurseries will be creating seven-foot high flower towers, giving showgoers the opportunity to vote for their favourite on social media throughout the week.

Other highlights at the 20th anniversary show include the new festival-themed Green Fields area full of family-friendly entertainment, grow your own gardening and art inspired activities.

The Flower Power Beds will mark the return of the north west’s much-loved flower bed competition for one year only, with some of the most flamboyant and colourful planting visitors have ever seen.

Friday, July 20 will take full focus of the 20-year celebrations as a birthday party and colourful parade steal the show.

Isobel Coulter, show manager said: “This year is set to be one of the most exciting we have seen at RHS Tatton Park as we celebrate a whopping 20 years of a colourful, friendly and fun day out.

“Full of innovative design, hands-on gardening, youth in horticulture, and some of the best growers in the country, 2018 encapsulates what RHS Tatton is all about.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors old and new to join us for a bumper birthday celebration.”
