A SANDIWAY pre-school has received a ‘good’ rating following an Ofsted inspection.

Smallworld, on Weaverham Road, received the rating for effectiveness of leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour, welfare and outcomes for children.

The report states that the leadership and safeguarding in place at Smallworld is ‘effective’.

The inspector, Karen Laycock, said: “The manager and staff attend child protection training and know their responsibilities to help to keep children safe from harm.

“The manager supports her staff well through supervisory meetings and peer reviews and allocates them different roles and responsibilities.”

The report reviewed the performance of the staff and praised their approach with the children.

Insp Laycock said: “Staff demonstrate good teaching skills. Staff plan stimulating activities that they know children will enjoy.

“Overall, they plan effectively for each child's individual learning. Staff help children to develop their mathematical skills.”

Smallworld was also praised for the environment it creates for its children and the attitude of the children themselves.

Ms Laycock said: “Children play in a very welcoming, inclusive environment. They arrive ready to join their friends in their play.

“Children behave very well and use good manners. Staff encourage children to talk about their feelings.

“Children are confident communicators. Children demonstrate high levels of maturity as they work together to resolve issues for themselves.”
